Bathpalathang Airport is a domestic Bhutanese airport in Jakar (Bjakar),[1] Bumthang District. The airport has been slated since the Royal Bhutanese Government's 10th Five Year Plan (2008). The airport was originally slated to open in October 2010,[2][3], and then delayed to November 2010.[4] By December 2010, operations were pushed back to March 2011,[5][6] then April 2011.[7] Shortages in the spring prompted a new target date of July 2011, however as of September 2011, the airport has not been opened for operations.[8][9]
Airport construction at Bathpalathang met several delays, including soil instability under the runway,[4][10] funding,[11], labor and material shortages,[8] and nearby river protection and diversion,[2][12] each of which underpinned the ultimate success of any airport at the site. Despite assurances by government personnel and contractors that the airport would be completed on time, the public remained conscious of the numerous delays as they arose.[4][12] Further complications have arisen from legislated land and property compensation schemes for those who have been forced to relocate to accommodate the airport.[13]
